Root Canal Treatment (Endodontics)

What is root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment becomes necessary when the interior of the tooth structure becomes infected. Root canal infection can occur after a tooth suffers external trauma, cavities are left untreated for a period of time, or gum disease is left untreated.

Every tooth has a root canal cavity which houses the pulp and contains the blood vessels that nourish the tooth and the nerves. When the pulp becomes infected, the patient will experience pain and sensitivity. This condition must be addressed right away, not only for the comfort of the patient, but also so that the tooth may be saved.

What are the symptoms of root canal infection?

Patients with root canal infection usually experience pain while biting and chewing food. Even brushing and flossing the teeth can be quite painful.

The infected tooth may become extremely sensitive to hot and cold foods, which the patient will feel as a sharp sensation in just one particular tooth.

Gums near the infected tooth may start to bleed and release pus.

When the infection is left untreated, even if the patient can bear the pain, the tooth itself may have to be extracted, and infection may spread to other nearby teeth and the gums as well. Even the underlying jawbone may begin to deteriorate.

How are root canal infections treated?

First, we carefully examine the teeth and take digital x-rays of the mouth. This helps us to analyze the structure of the jawbone and the extent of the decay within the root canal cavity as well. Next, you will be prepared for the treatment procedure. The teeth will be cleaned and disinfected to remove microbes from around the infected tooth and local anesthesia will be injected into the gums to keep you from feeling pain or discomfort during the procedure.

In order to remove the infected pulp from the root canal cavity, a small access hole will be made on the infected tooth using high-precision dental instruments. Dr. Martinez will then remove the infected pulp and completely clean out and disinfect the interior canal of the tooth. Now a filling is placed inside the sterile, empty canal inside the tooth and cemented into place.

To further protect the remaining hard structure of the tooth, and prevent future cracking or chipping, a crown will be placed to seal and protect the tooth. Dr. Martinez in San Jose uses the latest technology and tools to perform root canal treatment in the gentlest manner possible.

If you are experiencing a toothache, it almost never gets better on its own. Schedule an online appointment or call us at (408) 578-0240 to have a consultation with Dr. Martinez, and we'll be happy to guide you further.

Tooth ExtractionsTooth Extractions

Tooth Extractions

The best preferred dental option is to keep the natural teeth intact for as long as possible. However, teeth get damaged and decayed due to various reasons and may require extraction. As a person reaches their late teens and early twenties, wisdom teeth often become problematic and require removal. Dr. Martinez at Ideal Dental Care in San Jose is able to perform both simple and surgical extractions.

Simple Extraction

A simple extraction is performed for teeth that are visible above the gum line and don't involve complications like multiple cracks, chips, or long roots. The tooth is loosened using an elevator and is pulled out using forceps. The procedure is carried out under local anesthesia.

Surgical Extraction

A surgical extraction is performed when the teeth to be extracted are not easily accessible. They lay impacted below the gums or break below the gum line. An incision is made in the gums to access the tooth better, and the tooth is pulled out using forceps. Once the tooth has been removed, the gum is stitched back into place. The procedure is carried out under general anesthesia.

When do you require a tooth extraction?

Although permanent teeth are supposed to last a lifetime, you might need a tooth extraction due to various reasons like:

Teeth may become infected with large cavities that run deep and reach the roots. These teeth cannot be saved with either crowns or root canal treatment.
Periodontal or gum diseases cause the gums to recede and pull back from the surface of teeth. As a result, the teeth become loose and require extraction.
It is important to extract impacted teeth because they cause infections and negatively affect the neighboring teeth. The extraction of impacted teeth requires a surgical procedure.
Some teeth need to be removed from the mouth to eliminate overcrowding.
Wisdom teeth often cause difficulties due to impaction or overcrowding.
Dental trauma from injuries to the mouth may leave the teeth chipped, cracked, broken, or fractured. Such damage is often irreversible and requires immediate tooth extraction.

Dr. Kenia Martinez is highly skilled and very experienced in both simple and surgical tooth extractions and carries out the procedure with as little discomfort to the patient as possible.

Periodontal ServicesPeriodontal Services

Periodontal Services

Periodontal diseases affect the gums and bone surrounding the tooth. They occur as a result of the continuous accumulation of plaque, a sticky film of food remnant, saliva, and bacteria on the teeth. The bacteria in the plaque attack the gums and causes bleeding, swelling, and redness. Dr. Martinez offers procedures and services that help treat or prevent these diseases at Ideal Dental Care in San Jose, CA.

Different Types of Periodontal Services

Scaling & Root Planing

This is a non-surgical and non-invasive periodontal procedure. It is an elaborate process that involves two steps and multiple visits to the periodontist. First, Dr. Martinez removes the plaque and calculus (tartar) from the surfaces above and below the gumline. The second step, root planing, involves draining the bacterial toxins from the teeth root to smoothen it and help gums reattach with teeth.

Gum Graft Surgery

Gum diseases can often lead to gum recession, which exposes teeth root to decay. With gum graft surgery, the periodontist takes gum tissue from the patient's palate or a suitable donor and then uses it to cover the exposed root. The procedure can be carried out for a single tooth or multiple teeth to help even the gum line.

Regenerative Procedures

The procedure aims at regenerating the tissue and bone structure lost due to periodontal diseases. In this procedure, Dr. Martinez removes the disease-causing bacteria and folds back the gum tissue to reverse the damage caused due to periodontal diseases. The next step involves supplying the body with tissue-stimulating proteins, bone grafts, or membranes to encourage its natural ability to regrow bone and tissue.

Pocket Reduction Procedures

When suffering from periodontal disease, the supporting tissue, and bone around the teeth are destroyed and develop deep pockets. Over time, these pockets get deeper, allowing more disease-causing bacteria to accumulate in them. However, these pockets can be cleaned to avoid undergoing surgery. During the procedure, Dr. Martinez folds the gum back and cleans it thoroughly to get rid of the bacteria and then places the tissue back in place. Reducing the pocket depth is pivotal in preventing recurrence of the disease and restricting its extent. The procedure greatly decreases the chances of serious health complications due to periodontal disease.
